Protirelin, formerly known as Thyrotropin-releasinghormone, is a tripeptide hormone released from the hypothalamus. TRH is widely distributed in the central nervous system and some peripheral organs, and in addition to its endocrine effects, it also acts as an endogenous excitatory neurotransmitter, producing a wide range of central and peripheral effects. It has some antagonistic effect on endogenous opioid receptors, but it does not antagonize the analgesic effect of morphine.
