Elcatonin is a polypeptide with stable secondary structure. Its main physiological function is to inhibit osteoclast activity, reduce bone resorption, prevent bone calcium loss, and reduce serum calcium in normal animals and hypercalcemic animals.

Elcatonin (molecular formula: C148H244N42O47) is a kind of single, non-glycosylated polypeptide chain consisting of 31 amino acids. It is a calcitonin derivative, and is used as an anti-parathyroid agent. It is mainly used for remitting and eliminating the pain induced by Osteoporosis. It has several physiological effects including: (1) inhibit the absorption and autolysis of bones, thus leading to the reduction of the blood calcium level; (2) inhibit the dissolving and transferring of bone salts, further promoting the excretion of calcium and phosphorus in urine; (3) it inhibits the process of calcium, phosphorus and sodium re-absorption by renal tubules.
